Great success in barbershop competition and performance begins with choosing good music, well-arranged, continues through learning all the correct notes and words, and then blossoms with the thoughtful application of attentive tuning practices and the use of the embellishments and opportunities provided in the arrangement. Once you have mastered these basics, then you can fully engage in telling the story to your audience. After all, that’s what music is all about: communicating stories to other people, and touching them in some way, whether through a funny story, a tender ballad, or a feel-good rhythm song.
On this page you’ll find some information that will help you figure out which songs will best suit your group. There’s also some geek-talk about Pythagorean tuning. I’ve included some helpful hints about making the most of your rehearsals, as well.
If you have questions about any of this stuff, feel free to email me. I’ll answer you as soon as I can; and if I don’t know the answer, I’ll find someone who does.
Blissful singing!
